POSITION: CHARGE NURSE

Tasks, duties and responsibilities
• To comply with standard policies and procedures as determined by the Chief Nursing Manager and the Senior Nursing Manager
• To assume continuing responsibility for the management of the management of the ward
• To support, supervise and carry out Performance Appraisals of Nurses and Carers in his/her ward
• To ensure that there is effective daily running of the ward including stores, supplies, new requisitions and replacement items.
• To delegate duties to the nurses as necessary
• To ensure that staff under his/her charge are working within the scope of professional responsibility as defined by their job description and as defined by the Code of Professional Conduct
• To take responsibility for the safety of the clients and employees at all times and make sure that all safety incidents are reported as necessary.
• To participate in the coordination and organisation of activities for the residents as part of the multidisciplinary team
• To assess care needs and evaluate programmes of care as part of the multidisciplinary team ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to clients.
• To evaluate staff workings through Performance Planning
• To develop business plans and facilitate audits for the ward as directed by the Chief Nursing Manager/Senior Nursing Manger
• Ward Charge Nurses to deputise for the Senior Nursing Manager and vice versa
• Office Charge Nurse to deputise for the Housekeeper in his/her absence.
• To perform day and night duties at the administration office as required
• Support senior staff in mentoring junior staff, students/trainees and visiting staff
• Take a lead role in health promotion and health education activities
• Participates in educational courses and training organised for nurses, carers and cleaners
• Initiate and participate in the collation of data in connection with a quality improvement initiative.
• May also participate as audit officers in connection with internal and/or auditory view.
• Be responsible for keeping updated inventory records of items in the ward
• Support a clinical environment that facilitates change and introduces innovative efficient care structures and processes that are beneficial to clients and the organization
• Use available budgets to ensure quality care and the delivery of cost-effective services while monitoring all personnel and supply costs
