2 euro commemorative of Manaco UNC Proof 2016

€ 3,250

Description

Brilliant 2 euro commemorative Proof coin of Monaco commemorating the Founding of Monte Carlo by Charles III

The coin marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of Monte Carlo by Charles III. Charles III was Prince of Monaco and Duke of Valentinois from 20 June 1856 to his death. He was the founder of the famous casino in Monte Carlo, which stands for the "Mount Charles" in Italian. He was born in Paris Charles Honoré Grimaldi, the only son of Florestan I of Monaco and Maria Caroline Gibert de Lametz.

The design of the coin depicts Prince Charles III as shown in a portrait by François-Auguste Biard currently preserved in the Throne Room of the Prince's Palace of Monaco. To the left a sketch of what would become the city of MONTECARLO in 1866 and at the top, in a line that arches around the outer edge of the coin, the name of the issuing country "MONACO", flanked by the mintmark of France (cornucopia) and that of its director, Yves Sampo (Pentagon with GAMP-YS initials)
